"FLOATING DONUT" CANCER COMMUNITY CENTER
The Floating Donut Cancer Community Center focuses on suggestive interior space boundaries and exterior space enclosure. The first floor includes more public spaces such as a sitting area, kitchen, and dining space. They are all connected but suggestively divided by the boxes plugged into the donut. As a place for the cancer community, the feeling of the “traditional hospital” which has many corridors and makes people nervous is intentionally avoided. The glass curtain wall allows people to see the outside and other parts of interior spaces, and a sense of lightness and floating is created by the form and materiality. Private spaces, such as napping rooms and meditation rooms, are located in the cuboids and open to the sunken courtyard. The sunlight enters from the L-shaped skylight, leaving linear light strips on the 23ft high walls. The courtyard is between the elevated first floor and the sunken ground. It is a relaxing space with the sunlight, natural airflow, and coziness caused by the enclosure of the boxes, “donut” and the ground. Moreover, the furniture is designed to work with my floor pattern. They are also designed into basic geometric shapes, scattered inside the donut, like the plug-in toy for kids.
